Natural Sweetners vs Artificial: Xylitol (Vitamina) vs Sucralose (gummies):
A new study finds a chemical formed when we digest a widely used sweetener in Sucralose is "genotoxic," meaning it breaks up DNA. The chemical is also found in trace amounts in the sweetener itself, and the finding raises questions about how the sweetener may contribute to health problems.
Xylitol (Vitamina)
1
LOW CALORIE
Xylitol provides fewer calories than sugar, making it a popular choice for individuals looking to reduce their calorie intake or manage their weight.
2
BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL
Xylitol has a low glycemic index, meaning it has minimal effects on blood sugar levels. This makes it a suitable option for people with diabetes or those trying to control their blood sugar levels.
3
DENTAL HEALTH
Xylitol has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria in the mouth, particularly Streptococcus mutans, the bacteria responsible for tooth decay. It may help reduce the risk of cavities and promote oral health when used in chewing gum, toothpaste, or other dental products.
4
BONE HEALTH
Some studies suggest that xylitol may have a positive effect on bone health by increasing bone density and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
5
IMPROVED GUT HEALTH/PREBIOTIC
Xylitol is a prebiotic, meaning it can promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. This may contribute to improved digestive health and a more balanced gut microbiome.
6
IMPROVED ORAL HYGIENE
Unlike sugar, which can contribute to tooth decay, xylitol does not ferment in the mouth and has been shown to have a neutral or beneficial effect on dental health. It is often used in sugar-free gums, candies, and oral care products for this reason.
Sucralose & Gummies, what is the link?
The topic of debate is Sucralose, a widely used artificial sweetener used in vitamin gummies & energy drinks. Research has shown that several fat-soluble compounds are produced in the gut after Sucralose ingestion. One of these compounds is Sucralose.
Research shows that Sucralose is genotoxic.
This study was affirmed by Susan Schiffman, corresponding author of the study and adjunct professor in the joint department of biomedical engineering at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
"The European Food Safety Authority has a threshold of toxicological concern for all genotoxic substances of 0.15 micrograms per person per day," Schiffman says. "Our work suggests that the trace amounts of Sucralose-6-Acetate in a single, daily Sucralose-sweetened product exceeds that threshold."
Other studies have found that Sucralose can adversely affect gut health, so we wanted to see what might be happening there," Schiffman says. "When we exposed Sucralose to gut tissues (the tissue that lines your gut wall) we found that both chemicals cause 'leaky gut.'
Basically, they make the wall of the gut more permeable. The chemicals damage the 'tight junctions,' or interfaces, where cells in the gut wall connect to each other.
"We found that gut cells exposed to Sucralose had increased activity in genes related to oxidative stress, inflammation and carcinogenicity," Schiffman says.
If nothing else, I encourage people to avoid products containing sucralose. It's something you should NOT be eating."
